Hey race fans, just a short little story here on a customer’s bike. A beautiful, well-maintained, 2007 FLHX with a stock 96” engine. This customer recently added a Screaming Eagle Big Sucker air cleaner and Rinehart True Dual Exhaust. Now I realize most riders brag about extreme HP and torque numbers out of crazy big bore engines, but I wanted to share this story just to show how important the proper calibration is to maximize your dollars spent on performance parts.
After the initial inspection, the bike was ready for some Dyno runs. The first three runs with zero changes had resulted in 61hp & 77ftlbs, the bike seemed to start and run fine, but obviously not a huge amount of power and it seemed to sound a bit off. I started by programming the ECM with a map that matched for a 96” Stage 1 with SE air cleaner and true dual exhaust. Again, Dyno test runs showed a change in the air/fuel but no gains in power. I then went ahead and calibrated the installed map, which basically means I told the computer how much air was moving through the engine and how much fuel to add. After three tuning sessions, I could feel the bike running smoother and sounding crispier. Final Dyno test runs showed 20% gains in HP & Torque, ending up with 77hp and 91fts! Pretty good numbers for stage 1 96”. The bike now runs mint and sounds sweet!
Performance parts need the proper calibration to ensure you’re getting every bit of performance out of those parts, and every bit of performance out of your investment!
If you any questions about getting more out of your bike or any tuning present issues, give me a shout!
